Bella Hadid wins the Cannes red carpet in vintage Versace

All eyes were on Bella Hadid last night as the supermodel made her debut at the 75th annual Cannes Film Festival wearing a show-stopping vintage Versace gown.

The strapless black dress, which flared out to a body-hugging mermaid silhouette complete with taffeta bow at the back, was from Gianni Versace’s spring/summer 1987 collection. It would have originally been shown 10 years before Hadid was born.

The stunning look, first designed for a Teatro alla Scala production of the opera Salome, was handpicked by Law Roach for the model to wear. The celebrity stylist, who is also responsible for Céline Dion’s 2016 transformation and for turning former Disney star Zendaya into a fashion maven, paired the dramatic number with sparkly teardrop Chopard earrings and Le Silla black heels. While Hadid rounded the decadent look with a glamorous smokey cat eye and slicked-back bun for her appearance on the iconic carpeted steps ahead of The Innocent screening.

It’s not the first time Hadid has sported vintage on the Cannes red carpet, having previously broken the internet with historic designs by Jean Paul Gaultier and Roberto Cavalli. Whether it’s down to a growing awareness of fashion’s ecologically damaging need for newness or a desire for individualistic style in the face of Instagram homogeny, Hadid is fast becoming a poster girl for sustainable red carpet fashion and we’re here for it.
