Mexican pop star Belinda says she received death threats after comments about her upcoming collaboration with Danna were interpreted by some fans as a slight toward fellow singer Kenia OS, prompting the artist to publicly call for an end to online harassment.
The controversy began after Belinda spoke to Vogue about her long-awaited duet with Danna, describing the project as a rare collaboration between two major Mexican pop stars. During the interview, she said that "egos" often prevent artists from working together, but that she and Danna had been able to put those differences aside "for the love of music."
While Belinda did not mention Kenia OS by name, some social media users interpreted her remarks as dismissing the singer, with whom Belinda previously collaborated on the 2024 hit 'Jackpot', featured on Belinda's album Indómita. The speculation quickly fueled heated exchanges between fan communities across Instagram, X and TikTok.
As criticism intensified, Belinda addressed the situation in a voice message shared with her Instagram community, revealing that the online backlash had escalated beyond criticism.
"I started receiving so much hate, so much hostility, even death threats. I'm not used to receiving death threats," the singer said, explaining that she decided to delete one of her social media comments because of the volume of abusive messages she was receiving.
Belinda stressed that she has never encouraged attacks against other artists and urged her followers not to respond to negativity with more hostility.
"I want to ask you to focus on the positive comments, and when we receive negative ones, not to answer with hate because there is already too much hatred in the world," she said.
The singer also sought to clarify the remarks that sparked the controversy, saying her comments had been taken out of context.
According to Belinda, when she referred to the collaboration with Danna as unprecedented, she was speaking specifically about the two of them. The artists grew up together as child actresses in Mexican television and have followed similar career paths, making the duet particularly meaningful to her.
"I was referring specifically to Danna and me because we grew up together in soap operas when we were children and have had very similar careers," she explained.
Belinda also emphasized that she wants to maintain positive relationships with her fellow performers, especially women in the music industry. "I want to have a beautiful relationship with all my colleagues because women deserve respect, and I've always given that respect to the artists I work with," she said.
The dispute has also drawn Danna into the conversation. Without directly addressing the controversy, she asked fans to avoid engaging in online hostility, encouraging them instead to "respond with love" and reject attacks on social media.
Neither Belinda nor Kenia OS has indicated that they are personally at odds. The controversy has been fueled largely by fan interpretations of Belinda's interview rather than any direct exchange between the two singers.
