Belief key for Irvine Vics as boss hails 'fantastic' win against Finnart

Dougie MacDuff insists belief is soaring at Irvine Vics after an impressive start to the season.

The Westenders made it four West of Scotland League Third Division wins in a row on Wednesday night with a 1-0 victory at home to newly-promoted Finnart.

Steven Gaffney's late header sealed a particularly satisfying three points for boss MacDuff who reckons his side are riding the crest of a wave.

He said: "It was a fantastic time to score and a fantastic result against a really good Finnart side.

"I think right now the boys have got the belief that they're not going to get beat.

"This was a game I was really worried about when the fixtures came out.

"Finnart had an exceptional season last year and ran away with the league.

"They put five past Girvan a few weeks ago so we knew we were going to be in for a really tough game.

"They've got a great work ethic and are well drilled. They are going to cause teams problems this season but I thought we created plenty of chances and deserved the win."

Vics came flying out the traps, frontman Kevin Adam rattling the crossbar with a brilliant bicycle kick in the sixth minute.

The woodwork came to Finnart's rescue again just after the half hour mark, Adam unlucky with a header this time.

The visitors posed more of a threat after the break, but Vics grabbed what proved to be the winner in the 88th minute when Gaffney reacted quickest to a flick-on at a corner kick to squeeze home a header at the back post.

MacDuff reserved some praise for the referee, adding: "It was a really good, old fashioned physical game and I thought the ref did well to let things flow.

"He didn't get every decision right but it was good to see both teams going at it."
