Belgium issue Kevin De Bruyne ankle injury update after Portugal win at Euro 2020

Belgium will assess Kevin De Bruyne's ankle injury today as they hope to have their playmaker available for the rest of Euro 2020.

De Bruyne was challenged from behind by Portugal's Joao Palhinha just before half time in their last-16 clash with Portugal on Sunday night, in a game which saw plenty of fouls, flare ups and questionable tackling.

The City man, who turns 30 today, attempted to continue after the break, but lasted just two minutes before signalling he had to come off.

He was seen in the second half with a large ice pack on his ankle while sat on the bench, and in an encouraging sign was walking relatively freely around the pitch after Belgium held on for the win.

Belgium are also sweating on the fitness of Eden Hazard, who appeared to pull his hamstring in the closing stages, with goalkeeper Thibault Courtois telling reporters after the game that he believed Hazard's tournament was over.

As for De Bruyne, head coach Roberto Martinez offered a timeframe on when Belgium will know more about his ankle issue.

"It’s too early to say how they are doing," he said.

"With Kevin, it’s the ankle – he couldn’t really turn in the second half. With Eden it’s the muscle, but we have to wait for a diagnosis."

In another interview, Martinez said De Bruyne will be assessed by medical teams today.

He said: "We're going to need 48 hours to find out the extent of injuries. Kevin De Bruyne is ankle, it was a really bad tackle. We don't have a diagnosis from the medical department.

"Eden Hazard is more muscle. We will go back to Belgium tonight and have the scans tomorrow."

Belgium next face Italy in their quarter final on Friday night, giving De Bruyne just five days to be ready if he can recover.
