Belgium coach Roberto Martinez explains plan for Man City star Kevin De Bruyne

Kevin De Bruyne is set to play his first game since the Champions League final when Belgium take on Denmark at the European Championship.

The Belgian star was forced off during Manchester City's 1-0 defeat to Chelsea after suffering fractures to his nose and eye, forcing him to sit out the opening round of the international tournament. However, he has travelled to St. Petersburg with the rest of the Belgium squad and is available for their second match of the group stage.

Having played so little football in recent weeks, the task for coach Roberto Martinez will be how best to utilise the playmaker in order to bring him up to full match sharpness for the rest of the tournament. The former Wigan and Everton coach indicated that the next two fixtures will be used for that purpose as Belgium look to put themselves in the best possible position for the knockout stage of the competition.

The programme is very clear for Kevin De Bruyne," Martinez told a press conference.

"He's medically fit, he has the green light to be in a match situation. Obvious now is the question of seeing how long Kevin can play and how we can use the two games that we have in five days to try to bring him to the 90 minutes.

"I'm really pleased with the progress that he's making - every day he makes a big difference."

Belgium can go three points clear at the top of Group B with a win over Denmark after Russia beat Finland on Wednesday to put their first points on the board.
