The Belgium coach, Marc Wilmots, has said he will make a decision on his future after the Euro 2016 qualifier against Wales having been approached by the German side Schalke about their vacant managerial position.
Roberto Di Matteo resigned as the Schalke coach earlier this week after a disagreement with the club and Wilmots, who guided Belgium to the quarter-finals of the World Cup in 2014, has emerged as their preferred replacement.
However, speaking to the Belgian media before the crucial qualifier against Chris Coleman’s Wales on 12 June, the 46-year-old, who had two spells as a player at Schalke, has admitted he is weighing up the offer.
“Schalke have contacted me but I now prefer the national team. I will in any case never resign but I do have the freedom to get out on the basis of a clause in my contract,” said Wilmots.
“But I want now to focus on the upcoming matches. The national team needs it. It’s possible that I’m gone but I can just continue until 2018. We will after the game see what happens.”
Last October, Wilmots signed a new deal to take him through to the 2018 World Cup in Russia despite an approach from Schalke. However, the Belgian newspaper HLN has reported he is now managed by the super-agent Jorge Mendes and is therefore more likely to make the move to the club where he had a brief spell as interim manager in 2003.
