The Belgian cyclist Antoine Demoitié is reported to be in intensive care in a Lille hospital after being hit by a motorcycle following a fall during the Ghent-Wevelgem road race on Sunday.

Team Wanty-Groupe Gobert described the 25-year-old rider’s condition as “extremely serious”. The incident happened at Sainte-Marie-Cappel (Nord), in the French area of Flanders.

The 151-mile event was won by the world champion Peter Sagan, the Tinkoff rider beating his breakaway companions after taking the wheel of the Russian Vyacheslav Kuznetsov, who launched the final sprint but finished third.
