Belgian man charged over US embassy 'terror attack plot' in Brussels

A man has been charged in connection to a suspected terror attack plot on the US embassy in Brussels.

The Belgian suspect, identified only by the initials MG, was arrested by anti-terror police on Saturday.

He was charged on Monday with "an attempted attack in a terrorist context and preparing a terrorist offence".

Police arrested the suspect after acting on information suggesting the embassy might be attacked.

Belgian state broadcaster RTBF said the man, who denies the allegations, has been under police surveillance for some time.

It reported he was recently spotted acting suspiciously near the embassy.

Prosecutors said they had "converging indications", leading them to believe the man was plotting an attack.

The statement said no more details will be released at this stage, to protect the ongoing investigation.

Additional reporting by agencies.
