Belfast Zoo closed to public because of 'treacherous conditions'

Belfast Zoo will be closed to the public on Wednesday because of 'treacherous conditions' caused by ice.

The animals got their first taste of winter snow as the white stuff fell on Cavehill on Tuesday, January 4.

But after a cold night and morning it is understood the Belfast City Council facility is now coated with a layer of frost.

The zoo has apologised for any inconvenience caused to those who had planned a visit today.

In a social media update to visitors, a spokesperson said: "Belfast Zoo is closed today due to the wintry weather

"We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause."

Anyone with tickets for Wednesday, January 5, is advised to contact the zoo to either arrange a refund or change the date of their visit.

It is understood staff at the zoo hope the ice will have melted by tomorrow. Anyone planning to visit is advised to keep an eye on the zoo's social media pages for updates.
