Belfast weather: Pollen bomb warning for hay fever sufferers this Bank Holiday weekend

As we head towards a sunny and warm Bank Holiday weekend, hay fever sufferers are being warned to expect high pollen levels in Northern Ireland.

Data from the Kleenex Pollen Forecast shows that pollen levels across the United Kingdom are expected to be high this weekend, potentially leading to a wave of runny noses, sore eyes, and sneezing fits.

The sunny weather and temperatures around 20 degrees forecast for the weekend are expected to contribute heavily to these higher pollen levels.

Pollen levels are measured by Pollen Grains Per Cubic Metre (PPM), with a reading over 200 for tree pollen being high, and anything above 704 very high.

The forecast for Belfast is predicting that we will reach 285 PPM this Sunday.

Other regions of the UK predicting high pollen levels this weekend include:

  • London: 277 PPM
  • Bristol: 267 PPM
  • Leeds: 272PPM
  • Leicester: 289PPM
  • Liverpool: 290 PPM
  • Manchester: 281 PPM
  • Nottingham: 288 PPM

However, don’t despair – if you’re planning to head out and enjoy the weather this Bank Holiday weekend there are ways you can manage your hay fever symptoms when out and about.

Amena Warner, Head of Clinical Services at Allergy UK has provided some tips:

  • Consider your wardrobe choices
  • Try using an allergen barrier balm
  • Schedule your daily outings carefully
  • Shower when you return home
  • Always carry a pack of tissues with you
