Belfast vegan shares top tips for a cracking Christmas dinner

While Christmas is still synonymous with Turkey and Ham, more and more people are turning their back on the traditional meat feast for a plant based celebration.

And with growing numbers of vegans and vegetarians among us, the sheer volume of products on offer in supermarkets and shops up and down the country has well and truly mushroomed, while celebrity chefs have come up with some seriously cracking recipes.

This now means a Christmas feast being everything but the meat is truly a thing of the past.

Vegans and vegetarians can now tuck into a whole host of meat free party food that's sure to fill your tummy as well as your heart - and the meat eaters among us many even enjoy it too.

We've spoken to a Belfast vegan to learn what's out there for Christmas Day.

Surviving Now Thriving's Amy Robb told us: "There are endless options for roasts and sides and desserts in shops now which are INCREDIBLE (I've already tried many) with new launches seemingly everyday.

"Or if you're a whizz in the kitchen, knock up your own feast!" added the 29-year-old Vegan Belfast Guide organiser.

"If going to a party/having a Christmas with non-vegans definitely come prepared if they're not willing to make you something so whether that means bringing your own shop-bought or homemade main and snacks and desserts to avoid missing out!

"Potatoes and all the vegetables and gravy are usually fine - it's just a main course we need... then for all nibbles and party food, there's cocktail sausages, sausage rolls, duck spring rolls, no pigs in blankets, quiche, all the fake ham and chicken and turkey slices for sandwiches...the list goes on! It's never been easier to be vegan honestly."

Here's a few things in the shops you could cook up for a Christmas main:

Wicked Kitchen No Turkey, £5 with a Tesco Clubcard

The protein based roasting crown from brothers Derek & Chad is seasoned with salt and pepper and topped with a star shaped garlic melt and will serve four - so there's enough for a small family. It's available online and instore.

Lidl's Deluxe Sharing Wellington, £2.79

You can choose from either Mushroom, Butternut Squash & Cranberry for vegans or Butternut Squash & Goat's Cheese, which with the cheese caters to vegetarians. Both are for sharing.

Sainsbury's has claimed a first for vegans with its Plant Pioneers No Gammon with Maple Glaze, £5.50

This wheat and pea protein joint is smothered in a sticky maple glaze for a glossy finish and has been available from December 8 - we hope there's some left!

Marks & Spencer

Plant Kitchen vegan duck croquettes are just one of the things they shop has to offer. They’re made with shredded soya and balsamic onions, coated in golden, crunchy breadcrumbs and served with a tangy cherry hoisin sauce for dipping.

Then there's Jamie Oliver's Christmas dinner ideas.

The much loved chef has come up with some great ideas so you don't have to and there's a whole section of his website dedicated to helping you make a Christmas feast. Check it out here.

"Being vegan at Christmas doesn’t have to be a head scratcher," he says. "There are heaps of alternatives to classic Christmas recipes, as well as exciting new treats to keep things fresh during the festive season."
