Belfast Trust worker Tony Doherty dies from coronavirus days after his parents

Belfast Trust has said a health worker who died was a “larger than life figure with a heart of gold”.

In a statement the health trust paid tribute to “our friend and colleague Tony Doherty”.

The Trust statement did not say how Mr Doherty, from Banbridge, Co Down, died but it is understood he had contracted Covid-19. His parents, from West Belfast, also passed away in recent days. Mr Doherty died yesterday.

In their statement, Belfast Trust said: “The Patient & Client Support Services team and wider Belfast HSC Trust are deeply saddened by the passing of our friend and colleague Tony Doherty.

“Tony was a valued member of our team, but more importantly, he was our friend. Tony was a larger than life figure with a heart of gold who made an instant and lasting impression on everyone he met.

"We all shared many laughs and good times with Tony and we hope these memories can provide some comfort to everyone in the days and weeks ahead.

“Our thoughts and condolences are with Tony’s wife and son, his family and friends at this very sad time. We would ask that the family’s privacy is respected.”
