Belfast Trust radiotherapy delays apology after technical fault

Belfast Trust has apologised to cancer patients who are experiencing delays after a technical fault with radiotherapy machines.

Those scheduled to receive radiotherapy at the cancer centre at Belfast City Hospital this week have reported delays.

The Trust issued an apology and said the delays were due to a technical fault with a number of the machines that provide the treatment.

But a spokesperson warned there could be further delays this week.

In a statement, the Trust said: "The Belfast Trust is currently managing a technical fault with a number of Linear Accelerators, the machines which provide radiotherapy treatment at the Northern Ireland Cancer Centre.

"Currently the machine manufacturers are in the process of running diagnostic tests to identify the cause of this fault and will carry out any remedial repairs as quickly as possible. Whilst patients have experienced delays today, and there may be further delays in the coming days, contingency plans are in place to minimise patient disruption as much as possible.

"We are in contact with our patients and are keeping them informed as the situation evolves. Patients should expect to hear from the radiotherapy team if a change to their appointment is required.

"We apologise to our patients for this disruption."
