Belfast teenager celebrating after winning major Taekwondo championships in Far East

A young Taekwondo star from East Belfast is celebrating after claiming the biggest win of her fledgling career.

Enya Robinson won the Korean Ambassador's Cup World Championship in Muju, South Korea, this week.

The teenager travelled over to the Far East with her mother Foong at the invitation of the Korean Embassy and was coached by ex-Olympic Champion Dongmin Cha.

The Second Dan has previously won British, Irish and international titles but this is her biggest success to date.

"Enya is over the moon with the win. We are all delighted for her," said proud dad Edward.

"She won at the Ambassador's Cup in Dublin and ended up getting picked for these World Championships.

"Enya has been involved with Taekwondo since she was nine years old and trains five days a week.

"She is coached by Brian Kerr at Team Extreme in Belfast and a lot of hard work and dedication has gone into her career.

"Enya has made a lot of sacrifices which makes this win so worthwhile. We as a family have also made a lot of sacrifices, so this is a very special moment."

It took Enya (17) and her mother Foong two days to travel from Belfast to South Korea after the airline they were due to fly with initiated flash 48-hour strike.

"They had to travel via Paris and it took them two days to get to Korea, so preparations weren't great," Edward added.

"But thankfully Enya just seems to embrace it all. She has had over 150 fights and she is nerveless when it comes to competition time.

"She has already competed in Holland, Poland and now South Korea this year, and last year she went to Malaysia and Africa to fight.

"Like I said, we have made a lot of sacrifices but this just makes it all worthwhile."
