Belfast teachers come together to help children prepare for school transition

As our young people prepare for their first days back at school, the countdown is now on, with some starting next week.

For some pupils, it will be their first day at 'big school' whether that is as a primary 1 or as a first year student.

And through a series of online videos, the West Belfast Partnership Board is helping those who are transitioning from primary to post-primary.

Throughout the year, the Partnership Board, which is based in the Twin Spires Centre, hosts a variety of educational activities, talks and schemes.

With the pandemic ongoing, some of their work has moved online but the partnership says they look forward to welcoming pupils back face-to-face next year.

Their 'Summer Transition Programme' kicked off on Tuesday August 17, with video advice being shared each day throughout the week.

Local teacher Catherine Weir discussed the changes to timetables and the additional subjects that children will take on at their new schools.

Miss Weir, who is a P1 teacher, also explains through the WBPB videos the new school rules young people may encounter.

Alongside these tips and pieces of advice, are more practical videos for the children too - including how to do up a school tie.

The videos will be shared each day online, and can be accessed through YouTube, Twitter or Facebook.

A spokesperson for the Department of Education previously told Belfast Live that they have received good feedback from past pupils

She said: “The Department welcomes the work undertaken by West Belfast Partnership Board to provide Summer Transition Schools for local children.

"The scheme allows children to revisit some of the learning from their P7 year including literacy and numeracy which could easily be forgotten during the summer period."
