Belfast sinks and seven things you need to know about them

When it comes to Belfast things, the Belfast sink is up there with the best.

So did it really come from our great city? And what's so good about it?

Here are some of our favourite Belfast sink facts..

1. In fact they haven't been around since the dawn of time, but came to popularity during the 1700s.

2. They, of course, originated in Belfast, when they were used mainly by butlers.

3. The Belfast sink was a step on from the traditional Butler sink, and the main difference was down to one thing - the overflow weir.

4. In Belfast at the time, there was plenty of fresh water which meant it wasn't a big issue if some spilt down the overflow. In London, where the original Butler sink began, water was a precious commodity, so waste wasn't popular.

5. Apparently the authorities in Belfast at the time insisted on the overflow feature, while the London authorities were against it.

6. Belfast sinks tend to be deeper than most others on the market. Some commentators reckon it was because originally they were designed to be big enough to wash a small child, while others say it was because they were used in the Butler's pantry where big items were washed.

7. They continue to be massively popular and do big business, selling all over the world. Architect and interior designer Donna Collins from Belfast design studio Dot Projects , said: "The Belfast sink is an absolute design classic. I love using them in contemporary design schemes as they always add that extra bit of industrial character and rustic charm, which is a great mix."
