Belfast should hold a major New Year's event, councillor says

A Belfast councillor is to propose that the city holds a New Year's event of the scale of the hugely popular Monster Mash Halloween event.

On Sunday night, thousands attended the festive celebration at the Titanic Slipways.

It included live performance, music and a colourful fireworks display.

Now a DUP councillor is to propose that a similar scale event is held at New Year's.

Councillor Dale Pankhurst told Belfast Live: "Following on from the success of Monster Mash that attracts crowds from all over Belfast and beyond, I thought why don’t we do something like this for New Year?

"I recognise that we are a regional capital of the United Kingdom yet have no fireworks display or events to celebrate New Year.

"It’s time to change that and showcase Belfast at its best.

"The cost will be up for discussion at the City Growth and Regeneration Committee though something similar to Monster Mash will be a vision for this year at least.

"If the event proves successful then we can build on it year on year.

"Models from cities elsewhere can also be looked at as an initial step. I think this is important as it brings Belfast forward and showcases it as a modern city.

"It is my vision for everyone of all ages in this city to come together and celebrate things that unite us all. This is a first step towards that vision."
