Belfast's Victoria Park remains open says Councillor after pedestrian gate mysteriously padlocked

A Belfast City Councillor has clarified that a popular East Belfast park remains open, despite someone placing a padlock on the pedestrian gate.

Cllr Peter McReynolds has highlighted the situation after one of the pedestrian entrances to Victoria Park was secured with a padlock, not allowing people to enter.

In a statement the Alliance party representative said: "Unfortunately, someone has taken it upon themselves to lock the pedestrian entrance to Victoria Park.

"This has not been a Belfast City Council decision and you can still access this incredible resource for physical/mental health via the other pedestrian entrances.

"Council will be out as soon as possible to remove the lock."

Cllr McReynolds also urged those using the facility to ahere to social distancing regulations to help stop the spread of Coronavirus.

He added: "I would strongly urge people to limit their usage of the park to once per day, maintain social distancing at all times and to act within government guidelines."
