Belfast ranked UK's third most beautiful city for buildings

Belfast is the third most beautiful city in the UK, according to research.

Or at least when it comes to buildings...

A study by Online Mortgage Advisor measured the beauty of over 2,400 buildings in the UK to find out which cities have the most beautiful buildings.

Each building was given a 'beauty score' using the golden ratio (1:1.618) - a mathematical set of proportions often been used as a measure of how aesthetically perfect an object is.

The score represents the average percentage match of a city’s buildings to the golden ratio. The higher the score, the closer a city’s buildings are on average to matching the golden ratio.

Belfast achieved an overall score of 82.9% for its beauty.

Central Library (98.2%), Bank of Ireland (92.5%), the Titanic Museum (86.5%), City Hall (73.7%) and Waterfront Hall (66.5%) were deemed the most beautiful in the city.

Chester was crowned the most beautiful in the UK. The famous walled city has the best-preserved Roman Fortress Wall in Northern Europe, and its buildings such as the Three-Old-Arches, St. Michael's Row and Chester Library got it an overall score of 83.7%

London followed a close second at 83%, thanks to buildings such as The Royal Exchange and the Royal Albert Hall.

Liverpool and Durham made the top five, while Bristol, Oxford, Birmingham, Edinburgh and Cardiff made up the rest of the top 10.
