Belfast ranked as one of the best cities in the UK to work

Belfast has been named as one of the top cities to work in, according to a worldwide recruitment website.

Glassdoor, which is based in California and is one of the world's largest job and recruiting sites, has ranked the 25 best towns & cities in the UK for jobs in 2020.

Glassdoor's criteria for their rankings took into account job satisfaction based on responses on their website. It also considered the number of job openings, the median base salary of jobs, and the average home value of each city.

Belfast has been ranked as No. 13 on Glassdoor's list of the top 25 cities in the UK to work in.

With an average home value of £159,625 and median base salary of £21,436, Belfast has emerged as a highly desirable place to live in.

Jo Cresswell, Careers Expert at  Glassdoor , commented on Belfast's place in the list, telling Belfast Live: "Belfast is making a name for itself as a desirable city to work and live, moving up four places on Glassdoor's ranking since 2018.

"While median base salary is well below the national UK average, so too are property prices and general cost of living. This, in addition to its rich cultural scene, makes it a tempting destination.

"Belfast also has an increasingly thriving business scene; endorsements from the likes of Microsoft and Ulster Bank creating new jobs in the city is a further push for professionals to consider the area."

The list also features cities like Slough, Cambridge and Gloucester, which were the top three respectively.

Belfast was the only Northern Irish city to feature in the top 25.

Commenting on the overall list and the trend of workers to move away from major cities like London, Amanda Stansell, Senior Research Analyst at Glassdoor, said:

“Our latest report shows that companies are continuing to look outside of the big cities to set up offices and recruit local talent, in part driven by ever improving access, favourable rents and salaries.

"The Golden Triangle between Gloucester, Cambridge and Guildford perfectly encapsulates the balance of open jobs and reasonable cost of living.”
