Belfast named in top 10 UK cities for traffic congestion

Belfast has been named as the sixth worst city in the UK for traffic jams, a new study revealed.

Analysis by sat-nav manufacturer TomTom said that Belfast motorists spend an average of 33% extra time travelling during peak hours.

A total of six extra days and 14 hours on ours roads.

The heaviest congestion in 2019 was on January 22, while Tuesdays between 8am and 9am were the worst time for drivers to travel.

Edinburgh was named the most congested city with 41%.

London, Brighton and Hove, Bournemouth, Hull, Southampton, Bristol, Manchester and Reading make up the the rest of the top 10.

Belfast dropped to 76th overall worldwide, 15 places better than last year.

Heiko Schilling, head of navigation at TomTom, said: "The UK was home to nine cities in the top 100 most congested cities globally.

"Overall congestion is up by an average of 1% (year on year) in the UK – a mild increase but an increase nonetheless. Only Manchester, Glasgow and Portsmouth have seen congestion levels improve.

"These results show that there's still a lot of work to be done.

He added: "Advances in journey planning, autonomous vehicles and car sharing schemes all promise to alleviate congestion in Edinburgh and other cities in the UK and around the world."
