Belfast movie starring Jamie Dornan official trailer released

The first official trailer for Kenneth Branagh’s movie Belfast has been released.

Belfast is a personal and joyful story about the power of memory, set in late 1960s Northern Ireland.

At the centre of the film is Buddy, a young boy on the cusp of adolescence, whose life is filled with familial love, childhood hijinks, and a blossoming romance.

Yet, with his beloved hometown caught up in increasing turmoil, his family faces a momentous choice - hope the conflict will pass, or leave everything they know behind for a new life.

Kenneth Branagh’s semi-autobiographical drama stars Jamie Dornan, Caitriona Balfe, Judi Dench and Jude Hill.

Balfe and Dornan play the boy's "glamorous, working-class" parents, with Dench and Ciarán Hinds playing his grandparents.

Its world premiere is set to be at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, with a November 12 date set for general release.

Filming for Belfast took place in the city last summer, with daily Covid testing, cast bubbles, and vigilance from everyone involved - with 50 per cent of the scenes taking place outdoors.

Speaking virtually to film students at the QFT last year as part of the Belfast Media Festival, Branagh said: “It’s a very personal film, set partly in Belfast and partly elsewhere, partly set in the past and partly set in the present.

"I hope that there is humour and I hope that it’s emotional. It’s a look at a people and a place in tumult through the eyes of a nine-year old movie-mad kid.

“My experience of Belfast when I was growing up was to be part of a larger extended family, one that lived nearby each other, in a world in terms of television that had three channels in black and white. We listened to radio extensively, listened to records extensively and we went to see films extensively and when we weren’t doing that, we visited each other."

The trailer is out now and you can watch it here.
