Belfast man who died swimming in Cushendall Beach named locally

A man from Belfast who died after a full-scale emergency in Cushendall last night has been named locally as Hugh Barry.

He died after becoming ill while swimming in Cushendall Beach in Co. Antrim yesterday.

Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue, Red Bay Lifeboat, NIAS crews, HM Coastguard Rescue Helicopter form Prestwick and Coastguards from Ballycastle and Larne attended the scene.

The casualty was transferred from the scene by NIAS Road Ambulance to Antrim Area Hospital.

A police spokesperson said: "Police received a report of a man who had taken unwell at a beach in Cushendall.

"He was taken to hospital by NIAS where he was pronounced dead.

"The death is not being treated as suspicious."

Although he was from Belfast he spent much of his time in the Glens.

Elaine O'Boyle from the Glens Cycling Club said, "Yesterday we lost a valued club member, gentleman, legend and friend.

"Hugh Barry loved Glens CC and his love of cycling was infectious and inspirational to all that knew him.

"All members of Glens CC are in shock and are absolutely devastated and for Eillis, his wife and esteemed club member."

Causeway Coast and Glens Councillor Margaret Ann McKillop said: "People in Cushendall are shocked and deeply saddened after a man tragically lost his life after getting into difficulty while swimming.

"This is terrible news. My thoughts and prayers are with his family at this incredibly difficult time."
