Belfast man hikes up Mourne Mountains to show just how much litter is dumped

A Belfast man has made a video to highlight littering and fly-tipping in the Mourne Mountains.

Andrew Kenny, 33 made the video after discovering the extent of the issue over the lockdown period.

"It's incredible" said Andrew of the amount of rubbish dumped in the area. "Things like tents, maps and loads of beer cans are just left."

He added: "I go up there regularly and will see several bits of litter lying around.

"It's mostly people who aren't local and who are going up for a barbecue and then just leaving it behind us."

In the video, Andrew takes a trek up the mountain with a camera in one hand a litter-picker in the other, and we follow him as he shows the careless littering happening in one of the most beautiful parts of Northern Ireland.

After he made the video, Andrew says he began to get messages from keen litter-pickers wanting to get involved in cleaning up the mess left behind.

"It's more like a community than a cleanup group" Andrew said.

"At the moment, it's difficult to go out in cleanup groups, so its become a case of people going out on their own and doing it.

"The ones that go up hiking regularly clean up after themselves - its an issue when people go up for a barbecue and just leave all their rubbish behind them.

"You see full-on chairs up there, just blowing about."

There are currently several groups dedicated to tackling litter in the Northern Irish beauty spot. Last month, Belfast Live reported that search and rescue volunteers had taken on the hike in a bid to raise money and tidy up the Mournes.

Andrew said that cleanup groups can only do so much - and that it's down to individual responsibility to keep the place tidy: "At the end of the day, it's about spreading awareness and making sure everyone is doing their bit to keep our environment clean".
