Belfast man caught up in Turkey tragedy pays tribute to Richie Molloy

One of the three North Belfast men who were plunged into tragedy in Turkey has paid tribute to close friend and "absolute gentleman" Richard Molloy.

Mr Molloy, 33, died after falling ill while pals Aaron Callaghan and Declan Carson were left in a coma.

Mr Callaghan and Mr Carson, both in their 30s, have regained consciousness and been discharged from hospital.

In his first social media post since the incident, Mr Callaghan paid a heartfelt tribute to Mr Molloy, also known as Richie.

Mr Callaghan wrote on Facebook: "Thank you folks for all the well wishes and messages, too many to get back to individually but it’s means the world.

"Thankfully me and Declan are safe and back up on our feet but thoughts and prayers are with the Molloy family on the tragic passing of big Richie.

"An absolute gentleman, I’m absolutely gutted."

The cause of Mr Molloy's death and Aaron and Declan's illness is still unknown.

Police are said to be looking at a number of possible causes for the men falling ill and losing consciousness.

It is hoped the family of Mr Molloy will have his remains home by the weekend.

Belfast’s Deputy Mayor and North Belfast  SDLP  councillor Paul McCusker said earlier this week: "People across North Belfast were deeply distressed and devastated to learn of a tragic incident involving three North Belfast men, travelling in Turkey.

"One of the men has sadly passed away, while the other two men are currently receiving treatment in hospital and have been discharged from ICU, 5pm local time.

"I have been in contact with the families of the men, who are profoundly grateful for the support and prayers they have received from people from the North Belfast community, the wider public and further afield."

He added: "I know the community of North Belfast will rally around the families of those affected and do all that we can help them at this difficult time."
