Lord Mayor of Belfast Councillor Kate Nicholl has credited her time with Youth Lyric, a Belfast based performing arts group, with paving the way for her becoming first citizen for the city.
Announcing Youth Lyric as one of her charities for her term in office, Councillor Nicholl said if it hadn’t been for her involvement with the group as a teenager, she “wouldn’t be Lord Mayor today.”
She said: “Youth Lyric holds a special place in my heart. It seems like only yesterday I was involved in the amazing plays and productions showcased each year. Being involved with such a diverse and fun group was a highlight of my youth.”
“I learnt so much during my time with the many fantastic teachers, students and volunteers and I truly believe I wouldn’t be where I am today without their help and support growing up; if it hadn’t been for Youth Lyric, I wouldn’t be Lord Mayor today.
“Their work in providing young people from of all ages and backgrounds with the opportunity to explore the arts is invaluable. Not only does it provide a safe and welcoming space for young people to express themselves, it helps them build confidence and communication skills they can use away from the bright lights of the stage.”
Youth Lyric is one of the largest youth arts organisations across the island of Ireland, and for over 30 years, has been teaching acting, drama, mime and dance. It currently has over 200 students aged 4 to 21 years, attending weekly drama classes in Antrim and Belfast.
Councillor Nicholl added: “Despite the pandemic, Youth Lyric have continued to support young people by providing workshops and classes online, ensuring no one was left feeling isolated. I’m looking forward to offering them my help and support throughout the remainder of my year in office, while taking a trip down memory lane.”
Youth Lyric artistic director Aidan Browne said: “We are absolutely delighted that our former student Councillor Kate Nicholl has chosen to support our work in this way. The Lord Mayor is a wonderful ambassador for the city and an inspirational role model for our students.”
