Belfast International Airport welcomes first passengers since lockdown - in pictures

Belfast International Airport has welcomed it first air passengers since lockdown restrictions were lifted.

Management revealed a number of new social distancing measures at the facility last week.

They included a one-way system, mandatory face masks, the closure of all shops, bars and restaurants and large areas of seating.

The first passengers to depart the airport this morning took the 7.05am flight to Liverpool. Police were on hand to distribute face masks.

EasyJet routes to London Gatwick, Liverpool, Birmingham, Bristol, Newcastle, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Faro relaunched from the airport today.

Airport MD Graham Keddie said last week: "We are going to operate social distancing throughout the airport. A one way system will be introduced, one entrance door, one exit door.

" Jet2 will commence operations from July 15, Ryanair from July 1, so we will see a gradual build-up of both airlines, routes and frequency.

"Hopefully as things improve Covid measures relax to some extent, for example social distancing going down to 1m."

Mr Keddie has described quarantine measures as "a stake through the heart" of the airport's summer trade.

He said on Good Morning Ulster that the airport has yet to return to capacity, adding: "Today we should have 22,000 plus going through the terminal and we should be lucky to have 700 or 800."

New Covid-19 safety measures at the airport include:

- Advising all passengers to wear face coverings in the terminal

- Where possible, only passengers with boarding passes will be allowed into the airport at this time. If you are dropping off or collecting others, we ask that you remain outside the terminal, preferably in the car park

- Clear markings on social distancing throughout the terminal

- A one way system for passengers entering and exiting the building will be operating throughout the airport to manage social distancing regulations

- Hand sanitizer and hand washing facilities will be available at various points throughout the airport

- Hygiene screens installed at close contact points

- Seating areas distanced with space markings

- No retail outlets, cafes or restaurants will be open at this time (although this will be reviewed regularly)

- Drinking water to be available only via water refill stations (people should bring their own bottles) and vending machines

- Staff will be on hand to guide passengers though the new system
