Belfast Giants helping raise awareness of Organ Donation at Dundee Stars game

The Belfast Giants will be helping raise aware of Organ Donation on Saturday night.

Adam Keefe's side take on the Dundee Stars at the SSE Arena (7pm start).

Fans will be able to go to get more information and sign up for Organ Donation ahead of the game.

There will be a short promotional video featuring our fans experiences prior to face-off.

The Giants have also donated tickets to families from various organisations linked to organ donation for Saturday’s game.

"In our fan base alone in the last year, two long time fans have passed away suddenly and their loved ones have donated their organs and saved multiple people," the Giants said on their website.

"Within the last three years, one of our young fans has received a heart value, another a cornea and one has received over 300 blood transfusions to allow him to live long enough to be able to receive a bone marrow transplant.

"Another one of our young fans has been waiting for a liver for two years. Seeing how much organ donation has impacted in such a small percentage of the population, we wanted to try to help raise awareness about donating and encourage people to sign up.

"For so many people, it’s something they mean to do and either, just don’t get around to or haven’t had the conversation with their families.

"Around 850 units of blood are used here every week and are used for treating cancer patients, complications during birth, trauma from major surgery or road traffic accidents.

"One hundred and fifteen new blood donors are needed every week in Northern Ireland with currently only 6% of the eligible population donating blood. A single donation can save three lives."

Anyone interested can register to donate blood by texting ‘BLOOD’ to 60081 or become a donor, by calling 03001232223, signing up at the table in the foyer or online at  www.organdonationni.info/register/online .
