Belfast GAA club suspend activities after positive Covid-19 test

A Belfast GAA club has suspended club activities after a player tested positive for Covid-19.

East Belfast GAA, a club only formed earlier this summer, made the announcement on social media this afternoon.

A club statement read: "East Belfast GAA has been informed by one of our members that they have tested positive for Covid-19.

"In accordance with GAA and NHS guidelines on dealing with a positive case, the club has suspended all further activity until public health contact tracers carry out full close contact assessment and testing.

"The club will be making no further comment at this time."

It comes as the GAA’s Central Council is expected to sign off on ‘return to play’ protocols for inter-county squads today.

Although club players haven’t been allowed to access dressing rooms since games restarted in July, arriving for games and training already togged out, inter-county panels have been given an exemption as they take part in elite sporting activity, which will allow them to convene in dressing rooms and gyms ahead of games resuming next month.

The GAA’s Management Committee last night went through the finer details of the arrangements for returning to play and will pass them to Central Council today for rubberstamping before inter-county training officially gets underway again on Monday.

They will only apply at inter-county level but with winter moving closer and county teams typically travelling longer distances for games than club sides, it’s a necessity.
