Belfast drive-in cinema organisers planning day of fun for families this weekend

The organisation behind a new drive-in cinema initiative has promised fun for all the family, as they get set to welcome hundreds of movie-lovers to the iconic Titanic Quarter this weekend.

Two Belfast companies have joined forces to host the event on June 13 and 14; events company May We and media and recording company, Red Box Media.

The cinema space, located in view of some of Belfast's best known shipbuilding landmarks, will play host to eight different films - all with the aim of raising money for Covid-19 research projects at Queen's University.

And while hundreds of people have already booked their tickets, event organiser Liam Creagh has said that there are still some spaces left for family friendly movies.

Liam explained: "There are three movies which haven't sold out yet, which we think are perfect for families. They are The Lion King, Toy Story and Up.

"We've been working for six weeks to get this party started and now we're getting the last minute details sorted. The screen will look perfect, even in the daylight. It is high impact and is 60 sq metres so it's the biggest movie screen on the island of Ireland."

As they get ready for the weekend, Liam says that the organisers have taken steps to turn these screenings into an exciting family event.

He said: "We're planning to give some prizes out so the youngsters who dress up as their favourite Toy Story, Lion King or Up character will have a chance of winning something."

The event will also involve interactive quizzes and audience participation and Liam says all measures have been put in place to ensure audience safety too.

He explained: "Our guests will just have to show us their tickets through the window of the car as they arrive and they'll be marshalled to their allocated spot. The screen is huge and the site is massive so we're able to make sure of proper social distancing.

"We've arranged the planned layout for the cars so that they can be parked in a strict 'checkerboard style', and that allows for social distancing and a great view of the screen."

And while these drive-in events are certain to bring a smile to everyone's faces, Liam is also happy to be raising money for a great cause.

He said: "Each movie entry costs £30 per car with the tickets available from Eventbrite, and it's important to remember that we're doing all this to raise money for Covid-19 research at Queen’s University's Rapid Response Innovation Fund. We want to get the word out there to as many people as possible so we can give them as much help as possible."
