Belfast crime: Man in hospital following alleged stabbing in the Holyland

A 21-year-old man is being treated in hospital following an alleged stabbing in South Belfast on Friday night.

Police said they received a report that a man had been "stabbed" on Fitzroy Avenue in the Holyland shortly after 10.30pm.

They first reported that he was 38-year-old but later said he was 21.

His injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

A man, aged 22, was arrested a short time after the incident and has since been released on conditional police bail.

"A 22-year-old man arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of an offensive weapon with intent to commit an indictable offence, has been released on conditional bail. Enquiries are ongoing," said a police spokesperson.

They are also appealing for information following the incident.

Sergeant Mike Brown said: "Police received a report shortly after 10.30pm that a man, aged 38, had been stabbed Fitzroy Avenue area of the city. Officers responded to the call, along with Northern Ireland Ambulance Service and the victim was subsequently transferred to hospital for treatment of his injuries which are not believed to be life threatening.

"A man, aged 22-years-old, was arrested by officers a short time later and is currently assisting police with our enquiries.

"I would appeal to anyone who may have witnessed this incident or have any information in relation to it, to get in touch with us on 101, quoting reference 2229 of 16/07/21."
