Belfast council announces socially distanced Christmas festivities

Belfast council has announced some of the festivities planned for this socially distanced Christmas.

There will be no Christmas lights switch-on event this year, but city hall has stated it will "be getting into the spirit of things," with a new festive lighting scheme.

Christmas lights will come on at different times across the city centre on Saturday November 14th to mark the start of Belfast’s Christmas season.

Some of the other festivities on offer this year include roving street theatre performers, and a special Belfast Christmas experience in the grounds of City Hall, with festive lights and installations, from November 21st to December 20th.

The city centre will host a variety of light projections and sound installations, a "gallery" of shop window displays, and vibrant makeovers on utility boxes and street furniture.

Beyond the city centre, funding has also been made available for communities to come together to dress and animate their own neighbourhoods for the festive season.

All plans have been drawn up with restrictions around social distancing in mind, and they are subject to review depending on public health advice at the time.
