Belfast Coastguard rescues man trapped in mud

The Belfast Coastguard have helped rescue a man stuck in mud up to his waist with waters rising around him.

They were called to the emergency on Thursday afternoon after a frantic message from a member of the public who spotted the man struggling in the mud.

Rescue teams from Northern Ireland and Scotland raced to the casualty and managed to extract the young man with just five minutes to spare fast from fast flowing waters.

Emergency services reached him by using a ladder device to spread their weight over the treacherous mud.

Coastguard and police personnel said they "worked frantically".

A spokesperson for the Belfast Coastguard said: "We received a call from Scottish police requesting assistance with a young male who was up to his waist in mud and trapped.

"With a fast flowing incoming tide a mud rescue team from Maryport Coastguard were tasked and due to their travel time by road our Coastguard Rescue helo 199 and Workington Lifeboat were tasked to transport them and their equipment across the Solway Firth drastically cutting down their response time.

"The casualty was released from the mud with minutes to spare before the tide was in round them.

"He was transferred into care of Scottish ambulance.

"We would like to thank everyone in all the agencies involved for a great response and a fantastic result."

Annan Coastguard Rescue Team based in Dunfries and Galloway, thanked the Belfast Coastguard for their help in the operation on Solway Firth.

A spokesperson said: "Well done to you all - CGOC Belfast, Annan CRT, Portling CRT, Kirkcudbright CRT, Maryport CRT, Nith Inshore Rescue, Rescue 199, Workington RNLI, Scottish Ambulance Service & Police Scotland.

"I would like to pass on my sincere thanks to all multi agencies involved in the excellent rescue of a person stuck in mud at Southerness point.

"They worked frantically to extract the casualty from the mud with five minutes to spare before we would have been engulfed by the in coming tide.

"Excellent example of multi agency working together."
