Belfast City Marathon 2019 organisers issue statement over length of new route

Organisers of the Belfast City Marathon have issued a statement after concerns were raised over the length of the new route.

This year the race was moved to a Sunday for the first time and the route was altered to start at Stormont and was deemed "faster and flatter".

But numerous runners raised concerns over whether the route was in fact 26.2miles or longer when they finished earlier today.

Belfast City Marathon 2019 winner is Joel Kositany

Many told Belfast Live their GPS and other tracking devices were telling them the route was around half a mile longer.

In a statement, Belfast City Marathon organisers said: "On 5 May 2019, close to 18,000 participants made history taking part in the 38th Deep RiverRock Belfast City Marathon on a Sunday for the first time ever including the Marathon Run and Wheelchair Race, Marathon Team Relay, 9 Mile Walk and Fun Run.

"This is a record year for the Marathon event with approximately 5,000 taking on the new marathon route. This is an increase over 60% on last year’s figure.

"Event Organisers however are releasing the following statement, having confirmed reports of a discrepancy with the 26.2 mile route length.

"A full review will be conducted and feedback gathered from all partners involved.

"The Event Organisers wish to congratulate everyone on their run today and appreciate the disappointment of some. They wish to extend their apologies to all impacted.

"Updates will be issued in the coming days via  www.belfastcitymarathon.com  and on their social channels Facebook, Instagram and Twitter."
