Belfast City Hall lights up with 'women warriors'

Remarkable women down through the ages escaped the shadows tonight as their portraits proudly lit up Belfast City Hall.

The Herstory light installation was created by professional artists and students in a bid to celebrate ‘everywoman’ heroines from across the island of Ireland.

From historic warriors to peace builders, schoolteachers and sportswomen, scientists and artists, aunts, mothers, sisters and community members - this was an ode to them all from RTEherstory in conjunction with Women in Business, Belfast City Council and Bullitt Hotel.

Belfast City Hall will light up with their images from 6.30pm until 10.30pm tonight.

The 2020 exhibition started in February 1 in honour of Ireland's triple goddess and matron Saint - Brigid and comes to Belfast from Dublin where the GPO was lit up.

Melanie Lynch, Founder of Herstory, said: "Women's achievements and struggles have been lost in the shadows for too long, resulting in global inequality and a regression of women's rights.

"That's why Herstory is harnessing the alchemical power of light, to celebrate women and equality, spotlight inequality, and create visions for a World of Equals."
