Belfast City Hall lights up for World Down Syndrome Day

Belfast City Hall was lit up on Saturday night for World Down Syndrome Day.

The City Hall lit up blue and yellow to mark the occassion.

The day is celebrated every year to highlight the vital role the Ups and Downs communities in Northern Ireland play in our lives.

The illumination is also celebrating the 50th anniversary of the formation of the Down’s Syndrome Association of Northern Ireland.

Events scheduled to celebrate the day were forced to cancel following the outbreak of the Coronavirus.

Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Daniel Baker paid tribute to his late mother Edna and brother David who sadly passed away.

"Today I was really looking forward to celebrating it with the ups and downs families.

"It was very much going to be a key event for me in my term as mayor because I was dedicating all of this to my mum.

"My mum had five boys and sadly my brother David who was Down Syndrome passed away soon after birth.

"Today was for very much for them both.

"And of course they are still with me in my heart.

"I wish everybody a happy, happy World Down Syndrome Day."
