Belfast City Hall illuminates in red as Lord Mayor honours R-CITY youth group

A glow of red could be seen from the bottom of Royal Avenue on Friday night as Belfast City Hall was lit up by the Lord Mayor.

Alderman Frank McCoubrey welcomed young people and youth workers from R-CITY, a cross community group who engage in positive youth work across the city each day.

The Lord Mayor picked RCITY, which is based on the Shankill Road, as one of his chosen charities this year, alongside the Royal British Legion, British Heart Foundation and a local charity which helps families affected by cancer.

Alderman McCoubrey told Belfast Live: "I have know R-CITY for some years and have seen their progress over the years in our communities and particularly around the interfaces. I was delighted to nominate them.

"I always think positive of Belfast. There is an awful lot of positive things going on. Unfortunately sometimes that is taken up with the negative. We have seen that over this last couple of weeks. But there are great kids out there and great organisations doing brilliant work and all I can do is to encourage them to continue that work."

Elise Massey attends the R-CITY group and says the support they've been given has been second to none.

She thanked the Lord Mayor of Belfast for choosing their group and for his hospitality last night at City Hall.

She said: "R-CITY works on a cross community basis and really helps to create bonds and friendships. It is really good. The Lord Mayor invited us up for tea and coffee in the Parlour and then when we went outside to the front of the building it was lit up in our colours.

"It really does make me feel proud. I would be quite quiet and when the trouble was happening I was in the R-CITY office. It was fun and chilled out.

"I have been in the City Hall before once, for a wedding, but tonight we got a tour and were really made to feel special."
