Belfast City Council looking for 13 acre site for new cemetery

Belfast City Council is looking for land for a new cemetery to serve the north and west of the city .

The council has issued a land requirement advertisement in a bid to find a 13 acre site within a half hour driving distance.

At the moment, burials can take place in four of the council's cemeteries , Roselawn, Dundonald, Knockbreda and Belfast City Cemetery, but Roselawn is currently the only cemetery with new burial plots available.

There are no new grave plots available in either Dundonald or Belfast City Cemetery, but burials can still take place in existing graves.

Cremations are conducted at City of Belfast Crematorium.

As part of future planning as the city's population continues to grow, the council is actively seeking to acquire a site for a new cemetery to serve the north and west of the city.

The ad states: "Our requirement is for a site of over 5.5 hectares (13.59 acres) within a half hour driving distance from North/West Belfast. Taking road infrastructure into account the land should be within an arc from Carrickfergus taking in Crumlin to Moira.

"Interested landowners of potentially suitable sites are invited to contact estates@belfastcity.gov.uk or 02890270385 for further information on this requirement."
