Belfast city centre pub announces 'circuit breaker' over Christmas due to Covid

A Belfast pub has announced that it is starting a "circuit breaker" over the Christmas period and will not reopen until the New Year due to Covid.

The Sunflower Pub took to social media on Thursday evening to say that due to a number of members of staff testing positive for Covid, it has decided to close its doors until January.

It said that it made the decision with a "heavy heart" but felt that staff and customer safety should take priority.

In a statement it said: "It is with a heavy heart that we have decided to close the pub until the New Year. Unfortunately, some of our staff have tested positive for Covid-19, and in the interest of their colleagues and our customers safety, we feel that we have no other choice than to have a circuit breaker until the 3rd January 2022.

"Thank you all for your support and for working with us during this challenging time. Keep washing your hands, wear a mask and look after each other.

"Have a very Merry Christmas from all of us at Sunflower.

"See you on the other side."

It comes as Stormont Ministers decided not to impose any further Covid restrictions at a meeting on Thursday.

They are due to meet again on Wednesday when it is understood that further measures will be considered.
