Belfast City Cemetery security alert now ended, say PSNI

Police say a security alert in West Belfast has now ended.

The City Cemetery on the Falls Road was cordoned off this afternoon after the discovery of a suspicious item inside the cemetery grounds.

A PSNI spokesperson said: "Police and ATO attended the scene after a suspicious object was discovered in the cemetery grounds on Tuesday afternoon.

"The object was examined at the scene and has been described as old munitions which are in a non-viable state. Further examinations of items recovered will be carried out in due course. Police cordons inside the cemetery have been removed."

Belfast City Council said: "Due to an ongoing security alert we are unable to open City Cemetery to the public this evening. The cemetery will be open again at 5pm on Thursday. We apologise for any inconvenience."
