Belfast City Airport to increase taxi levy charge by 25%

Belfast City Airport is to increase a levy paid by the public to hail a taxi from from the terminal.

Travellers have to pay £2 on top of their regular taxi fare for the convenience of being able to walk out of the airport to a waiting cab.

But now the airport plans to increase the fee by 25% to £2.50 - and the increase will again be passed on to the public.

One taxi driver told Belfast Live: "There is no need for a levy. This is just more money having to be paid by the public with the same service in return.

"There is nothing we can do as taxi drivers to stop this - we must charge the levy and the customer has to pay it and it goes into the airport's funds."

A spokesperson for Belfast City Airport said:  “Belfast City Airport is continually investing in its facilities to ensure that passengers can seamlessly and quickly pass through the airport.

“Last year the airport invested £15million reconfiguring the security search area and departures lounge.

“Our investment focus now shifts to improvements to the taxi area at the front of the terminal.

“Works will commence shortly to significantly enlarge the taxi rank to accommodate almost three times the amount of vehicles, hence improving the service.

“This is part of a wider ground transportation and parking improvement programme."
