Belfast City Airport emergency response as Flybe flight takes off and returns

Emergency services were called to Belfast City Airport this morning after a Flybe flight took off and was forced to return to the airport.

The fire service, police and Bangor Coastguard Rescue Team were joined by Bangor, Donaghadee and Larne RNLI at the scene.

It is understood the issues involves a Flybe flight which was leaving Belfast for Edinburgh on Thursday morning, June 20, and there are around 80 people on board.

A spokeswoman for George Best Belfast City Airport confirmed the flight took off for Edinburgh and returned a short time later.

In a statement Flybe said: "Flybe can confirm that the above flight landed safely at George Best Belfast City Airport having returned from airborne following a technical fault shortly after take off that resulted in the captain electing to shut down the number one engine as a safety precaution. The pilot followed all required procedures and the aircraft landed without further incident.

"As is standard procedure, the aircraft was met by the airport’s emergency service vehicles.

"All 76 passengers disembarked as normal when the aircraft arrived on stand and will be re-accommodated on the next available flight.

"The safety of its passengers and crew is the airline’s number one priority and the airline apologises for any inconvenience experienced."
