Belfast Christmas Market recreated in Co Down garden as birthday surprise for woman gutted it had been cancelled

Victoria McDowell celebrates her birthday every year with an outing to Belfast Christmas Market - but this year it wasn't to be.

Seeing how gutted the Events Management graduate was that it had become another casualty of the pandemic, her brilliant big sister Judith decided to take matters into her own hands.

So for Victoria's 23rd birthday, Judith went shopping for everything she needed to give her little sister a taste of the real thing, complete with all her favourites from the market.

The Ballynahinch woman told Belfast Live: "It's her birthday on Thursday.

"It's like an annual thing she does every year so she was raging [it had been cancelled] and then she raging that she couldn't get out anywhere with her friends."

So Judith decided to do something about it.

"It was my idea, it gave me something to do."

In a bid to keep it a surprise until everything was set up, the Co Down woman said "my mum took my sister down to my granny's and then when she came home I had it all ready".

Judith said their mum also thought "it was great" but said she didn't know how she "came up with these ideas".

"She helped me get all the stuff. I made the sign myself and then just got the lights and stuff from B&M," she added.

"I will probably leave the lights up over Christmas - it took me long enough putting them up so they can stay for a while."

But the barber said her little sister's reaction was definitely worth all the effort.

Judith said: "She cried. It had all the stuff she likes from it like the mulled wine, strawberry beer, crepes, pick 'n' mix.

"Then I had to start making mulled wine, making crepes and barbecuing burgers. She was loving it.

"You just have to take the positive out of a negative."
