Belfast Christmas in the 1960s captured in new videos

The festive season is in full swing and we're not letting our spirits be damped by whatever lockdown restrictions are thrown our way.

Whether it's lighting the fire, wrapping presents, or sitting down in front of a Christmas film or TV show this year, there's plenty of ways to embrace the holiday mood.

Now, thanks to Northern Ireland Screen, you can take a look back at what Christmas was like in Belfast in the 1960s.

New videos shared by NI Screen has shown what Christmas was like throughout the decades.

The clips have been shared as part of the organisation's Digital Archive, which is full of brilliant historical gems which capture days gone by in Northern Ireland.

And as the big day is nearly upon us, these videos show what the festive season was like in Belfast back during the 1960s.

The first clip, at the top of the article, is from a UTV report in 1964. The video captures a very different shopping experience in Belfast, with members of the public piling into a local market to purchase essential items before Christmas day. Among the top things on the list - turkeys and trees.

In the second clip, also taken from UTV, children gather around Donegall Place to watch Santa and his parade float while he makes his way to his grotto on York Street.

Santa also gives out some presents to children and parents as he arrives at his grotto.
