Belfast car fire investigated by police

Police are investigating after a car was 'deliberately' set on fire in North Belfast.

The fire service were called to the blaze on Rosapenna Street off the Oldpark Road on Monday night.

PSNI Sergeant Murphy said: “Shortly before 10.20pm, it was reported that a car was located in the area on fire. Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service attended and extinguished the fire.

"Enquiries are continuing and at this stage, the fire is being treated as deliberate."

SDLP Councillor Paul McCusker told Belfast Live that the incident 'endangered' residents.

He said: "I received a number of reports last night regarding a group of young people who attempted to block the Oldpark Road and then a car was set on fire endangering other cars and people’s homes.

"The top of Rosapenna and Hillview area has been unsettled now throughout the summer months and it’s a small number of young people who are involved causing misery for many residents who live there.

"These young people are as young as ten and we have repeatedly called on parents to help us resolve this and to ensure they are aware of were their children are.

"I have again wrote to the PSNI, education authority and other statutory agencies asking for better resources on dealing with this.

"I would again appeal to all young people not to be getting involved in this and think about the impact your having on local residents.

"I will be on the ground tonight and for the rest of the week to work and identify who’s behind this, it’s unacceptable that this small group of young people are allowed to continue to cause misery for many residents who live here."
