Belfast bus stop smashed as drinkers pour onto the streets after England match

A "small number of individuals" have been condemned for vandalising a South Belfast bus stop after leaving a pub following the Euro 2020 final.

Police were called to Malone Road just after 11pm last night after a large crowd poured onto the street from a nearby pub and "started going mad".

A witness at the scene said they were shocked by the actions of a small number of people who had left the pub, dancing on top of a nearby bus stop, with one person smashing the glass in it.

They also said that a van trying to travel through the crowd was hit and kicked, with one person climbing onto it to jump up and down.

The person said: "Once the match had finished, everyone had to leave the pub and poured onto the street and just started to go mad. Some people climbed up onto the bus stop and started jumping up and down, and one person came up to it and started to repeatedly hit and kick it, eventually smashing the glass.

"Then, a van driver tried to get down the road and he was swarmed by lots of people, who started hitting the windows and kicking the side of it. One woman even climbed up on top of it and started jumping on the van. The driver must have been terrified and looked like they were just trying to get home from work.

"I just felt that the behaviour was not on and was completely out of order. It was actually quite disgusting to see how some people had no regard for anyone else, especially those who will have to clean the mess that they have created.

"It is also not fair that a small group of individuals can act like that and it just ruins the atmosphere and fun that everyone else is enjoying. I can understand people celebrating but there is never a reason for destroying property like that."

Police have said that they attended reports that around 100 people had gathered outside of a licensed premises on Sunday night.

Sergeant McAnally said: “Officers were in the area, responding to another report which had been made to police.

“Some of these individuals had climbed on a bus shelter and a number of its panels were smashed. If anyone witnessed this incident, I would ask them to contact police on 101, quoting reference number 2361 of 11/7/21.”
