Belfast boxing promoter signs up former PRO14 rugby player

Belfast boxing promoter Mark Dunlop has bolstered his stable with the signing of former PRO14 rugby player Nick Campbell.

Standing at 6ft 7in tall, the towering Campbell used to play lock for Glasgow Warriors and also earned honours with Scotland.

The 31-year-old is now setting his sights on a professional boxing debut after signing up with MHD Management, in association with A McLean Bookmakers.

The Glaswegian is basing himself in Belfast as he continues his pursuit of becoming Scotland's first ever British or Commonwealth heavyweight champion.

“I’ve been a fan and friend of Nick for a long time and delighted he has chosen me to guide him on this part of his journey," said Dunlop, whose stable includes the likes of Tommy McCarthy, James Tennyson and Paul Hyland Jr.

"He has been a top level athlete for most of his life and his short but impressive amateur boxing career has been to a very high standard.

"He packs a dynamite punch, has a granite chin and stamina in abundance and a huge fan base. He has the attributes to take him to the top. I'm excited."

Campbell, who played at the Under 20 Rugby World Cup with Scotland in Japan back in 2009, is a former Elite Scottish super-heavyweight amateur champion.

He believes signing with the experienced Dunlop can reap reward in the months and years ahead.

“Signing with Mark has always been part of my plan, we go back a long way," he added.

"I've seen first hand how he is with the fighters he represents, he has a great working relationships with Frank Warren and Queensberry Promotions, Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing and MTK.

"To join a team that includes great fighters like James Tennyson, Tommy McCarthy, Paul Hyland Jnr, Eric Donovan and Conor Quinn is incredible.”
