'Belfast boxing fans called me a d***head, but I won them over' - Lee Haskins

Former IBF world bantamweight champion Lee Haskins admits he might near earplugs when he fights in Belfast this weekend.

The Bristol boxer takes on Irishman Davey Oliver Joyce at the Ulster Hall on Saturday night.

It is one of the big bouts on the MTK Fight Night card, which is headlined by Sean McComb vs Mauro Maximiliano Godoy.

Haskins lost his IBF belt to the now retired Ryan Burnett when they fought at the SSE Arena in June 2017.

Despite losing the 36-year-old admits it was an "incredible experience" fighting in front of so many passionate boxing fans in Belfast.

And he also recalls being on the receiving end of some comical abuse as he walked to the ring that night - and says he expects more of the same at the Ulster Hall this weekend.

"It was a good experience and I really enjoyed it," Haskins said of his showdown with Burnett.

"The fans give you s***, but they also appreciate what you're doing.

"I remember when I was walking to the ring that night against Burnett, some young fans were calling me a d***head and other things.

"They also told me to p*** off back to Bristol.

"But I remember after losing and giving it my all, the same young kids then congratulated me for doing well.

"They support their own round here which is amazing, but they appreciate their boxing.

"That's what I enjoy about boxing, whether it be a big show or a small hall event.

"The Belfast fans know their boxing so I can't wait to fight at the Ulster Hall. I have never been in there so it is something new.

"When I am old man I can say I fought at the Ulster Hall.

"There will be a lot of Irish fans there on Saturday night. No doubt they will be giving me s*** as well!

"I'll need earplugs this time! Hopefully I can silence them."
