Belfast Boxing Day traffic warning from PSNI due to football matches

Police have urged motorists in East and North Belfast to expect traffic delays and restrictions this afternoon due to two significant football games taking place in the area.

With Glentoran taking on Linfield at The Oval and Crusaders taking on Cliftonville in the North Belfast derby, the PSNI say there will be delays in the areas around both football stadiums on Monday afternoon.

In a statement, police urged motorists to expect a build-up of traffic and asked motorists to respect the restrictions put in place.

A PSNI spokesperson said: "With two significant football matches in the greater Belfast area today, road users and those attending the matches are advised to plan their journeys in advance.

"In East Belfast, delays can be expected in the Newtownards Road area from 12.30pm to 2.15pm and then from 3.30pm through to 4.30pm.

"In North Belfast, delays can be expected on the Shore Road between 1.30pm to 3.15pm and then again from 4.30pm to 5.30pm.

"Match organisers will have no waiting cones placed near both venues to maximise public safety, minimise traffic disruption and secure Emergency Vehicle Access to the venues and local communities.

"Motorists are asked to comply with these restrictions. If you are driving to the matches, please park with consideration to the local community and businesses. Traffic restrictions will also be in place for a limited time after both matches due to the expected volume of supporters leaving the facilities."
