Belfast boxer tells hilarious story about being mistaken for Anthony Joshua

Belfast boxer Tommy McCarthy has revealed how he was once mistaken for heavyweight star Anthony Joshua.

Cruiserweight McCarthy is currently in training for his upcoming grudge match with Chris Billam-Smith.

That fight will be for the EBU European, Commonwealth and British titles.

Appearing on the Brawl Boxing podcast, McCarthy chatted about the July 31 showdown with Billam-Smith, and also how he was once mistaken for WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, and IBO heavyweight king Joshua.

"There was one woman, she must have been 50, she was coming up behind me and she went 'AJ, you're doing great, son'.

"I turned around and went 'Are you serious?'. She said, 'I saw you on the Jonathan Ross Show, your mum must be really proud'.

"I just replied: 'Are you for real?'.

"She went: 'No, no, your mum must be really proud? And you bought your mum a house? She must be loving that?'.

"So I played along and just said my mum was loving it, and the woman said: 'I am sure she is, you were raised right. The whole family must be awful proud of you'.

"So I just said 'Aye, they're loving it. All the belts and all, they are over the moon' - and I walked away.

"I thought she would catch on but she didn't.

"Things is, I don't even look anything like AJ."
